AZ-204 is a fictional high school for gifted students from around the world. It has been created to help Az-204 and other gifted students achieve their full potential. The novel takes place in the year 204. Az-204, nicknamed “Dear,” lives in a small town in upstate New York. She is so gifted that teachers, parents, and schoolmates describe her as “books smart,” “outgoing,” “prepared” and a “self-starter.”

In college, Az-204 struggles to maintain her self-esteem. A teacher describes her as “a straight arrow,” a “fine flour,” and a “good listener.” When one of her classmates is accused of sexual harassment, Az-204 runs into a rough spot. Her tutor encourages her to talk to the alleged perpetrator and use a police report to bolster her story, but Az-204 refuses to do so. She stands firm in her belief that she will be “disappeared” if she talks to the man.
Az-204 parents hire a private investigator to track down the man she has sensed is after her. Eventually, with the help of private investigator detectives, the authorities learn that Az-204 father and step-mother are suspects in her disappearance. After a lengthy investigation, they are arrested and taken to jail. Az-204 parents are released, but not before she is suspended from her college. A letter from the school reads:
“In light of your recent conduct, we have decided to dismiss you from your membership and remove you from your teaching duties immediately. We regret this decision in the best interest of all parties concerned and believe that you would make a fine teacher if allowed to continue in our program.” Az-204 volunteers to resume her studies at the new campus, but her parents insist she not come alone. AZ- 204 grades suffer due to the separation and she must now find herself alone with her parents while attending classes at the new campus.
Will Az-204 succeed where other students have not? She does find the subject matter interesting and teaches interesting and thought-provoking material. However, many students are not impressed with her research method. One of her former students’ comments: “She was great, but way too boring. No way can I squeeze some life out of her.”

Az-204 uses the same format of writing as her other books in that each chapter consists of a thesis statement with a conclusion. The introduction of the book contains an essay called Directions for further reading. This addresses some issues students might be uncertain about such as the relationship between Freud and Azurite. The discussion is thorough and goes into much detail. However, this chapter does leave some questions unanswered concerning Freud and Azurite.
Following the acknowledgements section, the index is the next section that will disappoint some students. This has a very short list of footnotes and only a couple of pages in length. The index page is also very sparse and does not include photos or any other external references that might be helpful to students planning future research.
The Study Guide is designed to be a quick read. Pages are generally arranged in a way that the text is presented as a single sentence, with the source, date, and source given in bold.
